Birmingham, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) January 17, 2013 - While the High Street struggled generally over the Christmas shopping period, and some big-names such as M&S struggled even more, John Lewis Partnership proved a shining light with a big jump in sales - and a leading agency providing web design in Birmingham believes ALL retailers can learn 'The John Lewis Lesson'.

David Bryan of Birmingham web design specialists Opace said this week "Analysts have suggested that one reason for the company's sales growth is due to their 'reserve and collect' service - and this is a service that all retailers can provide."

The employee-owned department store chain said like-for-like sales jumped 6.2% in the five weeks to 31 December. Conlumino retail analyst Neil Saunders said John Lewis was probably the "standout winner" in terms of trading. There was a strong performance from its home shopping arm where sales jumped nearly 28% and have now reached £600m in the year to date.

Mr Bryan continued "Reserve and collect is a model for e-commerce that can be used by many different companies, even those who currently don't have any e-commerce offerings. For example, a sandwich shop can offer all its products online for customers to pre-pay and collect at lunchtime. This means the customer can collect without waiting in a queue and the shop owner can prepare in advance (and ease the 'lunch time rush') knowing that the goods have already been ordered. Plus they can use the data collected for future marketing."

"And for restaurants, customers can order in advance - again, this allows restaurants to plan better and for customers to be served without having to wait when they arrive at the restaurant. We believe many businesses can operate similarly.

Opace was founded in 2008 with the aim of delivering exceptional web and internet marketing solutions that deliver tangible results for their clients. It has grown to a team of twelve experienced consultants who deliver creative web-based marketing solutions that have helped their clients develop their organisations, make the most of new technologies and web marketing opportunities.

David concluded "Open source e-commerce applications are cost-effective, easy to maintain and virtually future proof so they within the grasp of small and medium sized businesses."
