Life Sized Maze Built to Teacher Students the Concept of IT Governance

The concept of building an entire IT governance system is a bit complex. The complex nature of the whole IT system makes it difficult for people to understand it.

Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) January 24, 2013 - The concept of building an entire IT governance system is a bit complex. The complex nature of the whole IT system makes it difficult for people to understand it. While many people can get by in life not knowing what it is, those that are studying to become an IT professional need to know what it is.

A local community college in Texas is trying a new approach to teaching students about IT governance. They are building a life size maze to help teach the concept.

"We noticed numerous students had difficulty understanding the concept of IT governance", said the director of the IT program at the community college. "No matter what we did in the classroom, no matter how many slideshows or videos we showed people were still confused. So, we took an alternative teaching approach."

The alternative teaching approach involved the school setting up an entire maze that resembles a business' or government's computer system. This maze has special corridors for different branches of the business or government, and students must figure out ways to make it through the maze.

"We set up various obstacles that could prevent the students from communicating with each other", said the IT director. "The students are required to figure out how to overcome the obstacles and get through it. I think it really helps them understand the importance of a properly setup IT governance system and the problems that can arise if it isn't setup properly."

The students at first were a little reluctant about the maze. Many believed that it was a waste of time and that there were other ways to teach the concept to them. However, once built the students loved the whole hands-on approach that is offered by this maze.

"I was one of those students that tried to protest having this maze built", said Jeremy Smith. "However, now I see just how cool it is. It really did help and it makes our college unique."

Several IT programs from around the area have requested that they be able to use the maze for their program. The community college is currently discussing the possibility of renting it out to other schools in the area as a way to help their program.

"I was surprised just how helpful it really was", said the IT director. "The students just needed that little extra push to understand the concept. I think this maze really helped."
