New York City, NY (prHWY.com) December 13, 2011 - A unique Western New York company specializing in in-home senior healthcare is taking a step back into time by developing a healthcare practice that models itself after the beliefs and customs of the Viking society. Combining the practices of both the contemporary field of medicine with the customs and beliefs popular during the Viking era, Vikings with a Heart, provides quality healthcare to the elderly and disabled in the comfort of their own home.

"Due to the hustle and bustle of American culture people have developed an idea that senior care should only be reserved for those in assisted living communities or nursing homes", said Tori McCaffery, founder and CEO of Vikings with a Heart. "Vikings with a Heart hopes to bring a little Viking culture back into American society and allow seniors to live at home comfortably while receiving the critical healthcare they need without having to be stuck in nursing homes or assisted living communities."
McCaffery came up with the idea for Vikings with a Heart after working in the healthcare industry for nearly 25 years. After working an extensive shift in the local nursing home where McCaffery would come into daily contact with elderly patients who didn't want to be in the nursing home or who felt abandoned by their families, she decided to get pro-active and make a change by starting Vikings with a Heart.

The Viking era may seem like a strange time period to travel back to but they have extensive roots in providing quality communal senior health care.

"The Vikings were notorious for providing some of the highest quality healthcare for that time period", said Professor Brown, a Viking expert teaching classes at the University of Lake Erie. "Vikings would group together as a community to provide the care elderly members of the community needed and would combine it with extensive herbal and alternative medicine practices that rival the ancient Chinese."

Patients under the Vikings with a Heart in-home senior care program receive regular check-ups from nurses and primary-care doctors, extensive physical and occupational rehabilitation, options for alternative healthcare, access to trained therapists and counselors, and regular visits from professionals dedicated to providing the companionship elderly patients need. This allows the program to meet both the contemporary and alternative the medical needs of its patients while also building a strong social community which is what the Vikings were known for.

"After suffering a stroke and working to regain my ability to walk and care for myself I was afraid my family would decide it was time to go to the home as they say," said Sally Shorefield an eight year stroke survivor and patient under the care of Vikings with a Heart. "My girlfriends at the senior center were all talking about this new company that gave me the care I needed in my own home and I figured 'why not give it a try'. And you know what? It's the best choice I've made in my life".
