A British entrepreneur is launching a new online discount service to challenge the likes of Groupon.

The Big British Giveaway allows businesses to give away their products or discounts to millions of people.

But unlike group discounting sites like Groupon or Living Social, the new service charges businesses as little as £1.

The American version of the site was deluged with interest and sold 1,000 promotions before it even launched.

As a result, the launch of http://www.bigbritishgiveaway.com/ was brought forward to January 1 next year.

The site will allow businesses to sponsor a daily giveaway or competition relating to their products or services in as many as ten cities across the country.

Users have to 'like' the business's Facebook page or follow them on Twitter in order to collect the deal or enter the competition, thus boosting a brand's social media presence.

And with prices starting at £1, Liverpool-born founder Mark Bowness hopes he will win over businesses who are fed up with group discounting sites taking up to 70 per cent of the spoils.

The price will increase by £1 a day, meaning January 10 will cost £10 and December 31 will be the most expensive at £366.

Mark said: "The popularity surrounding the daily deal sites has been the great buzz in the marketing world of late, but we are set to launch a new and very different concept to the public that will truly upstage the potential of the Groupon-style platform.

"We're thrilled that brands already see immense value in the format and that they're supporting our vision in strong numbers - weeks before we're even set to launch to consumers."

Online marketing expert Sam Allcock, of digital firm Custard Media, said: "The Big British Giveaway is an exciting addition to the online marketing portfolio.

"Our clients are constantly looking for new ways to raise their social media profile and this is perfect.

"I was already aware of the US launch and I am delighted we will now be able to use the in the UK too."

Helen Pawley-Tuft, Marketing Manager at Drayton Manor Theme Park said: "Marketing is an essential part of our business as it allows us to promote the park to as many people as possible. We believe the Big British Giveaway is a fantastic platform because unlike other online promotional websites, it allows us to control our costs and we jumped at the chance to be involved."
