Palm Beach Pain Institute Offers Pain Management Services in Boynton Beach
We all agree, pain is no fun to live with. It can be of varying intensity, locate itself in varying parts of the body, and can be indicative of all kinds of ailments.

The institute is run by Dr. Marcie A. Merson, M.D., who has a Board Certification in Pain Medicine & Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. She has affiliations with several hospitals and professional associations (the North American Spine Society and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians among them). She has also helped write at least one book, "Clinical Anatomy of Spine." A highly skilled three- person staff of doctors and office personnel work for Dr. Merson-- administrator Barton Gaskill handles patients' financial information (billing and insurance), patient care coordinator Tammy Knowles helps patients with their needs, and director of nursing Shelley Matez coordinates clinical activities.
At the Palm Beach Pain Institute, each patient is treated individually according to his or her particular needs. And their website (the URL is given at the end of this article) has a section devoted to patient education, to help their clients learn more about the various conditions treated in different parts of the body, and the procedures. There is a subsection on each of the joints where pain most commonly occurs (spine, hand, knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, and foot and ankle) and on pain management, as well as on their various procedures, both surgical and non- surgical, that are used to treat those conditions. The section for each body part is further subdivided into various pages devoted to anatomy and specific diseases; the section on the spine, for instance, contains the categories "anatomy of the spine," cervical radiculopathy, degenerative disk disease, facet joint syndrome, herniated disks, lumbar radiculopathy (sciatica), spinal stenilosis, spondylolisthesis, and "where back pain begins." Each of these links to a video that can be watched with or without audio. With "anatomy of the spine," for instance, the video deals with lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as "tennis elbow," which is a degeneration of the tendons which attach to the lateral epicondyle, the bony bump on the outer side of the elbow. A diagram shows the relative positions of the relevant muscles and joints; and the video illustrates the cause of damage (repetitive trauma or aging), its symptoms (tenderness and pain at the lateral epicondyle, which can be aggravated when the wrist is bent), and treatment (determined by one's physician; may include rest, a brace or wrist splint, physical therapy, steroid injections, ice, or anti- inflammatory medications, or any combination of these).
In the treatments section of the patient education page, only three are surgical-- the intrathecal pump implant, the lumbar radio frequency neurotomy, and the spinal cord stimulator implant. The others, of which there are many, are non- surgical. and include stellate ganglion block (injecting an anesthetic into the nerves of that region); lumbar sympathetic block (a similar injection into the sympathetic nerves of the lumbar region); celiac plexus block (into the nerves surrounding the aorta); and facet joint injections (injecting a steroid into the facet joints of the lower back).
All the videos may be printed in brochure format. They may also be viewed and listened to in Spanish.
