She told the security staff that her bag had £100,000 worth of jewellery inside and persuaded them to let her take the bag on board because she didn't want to let it out of her sight.

However, before taking off an airline worker ordered her to hand the bag over so it could be stowed in the hold and when she landed in Phoenix, in Arizona, she found that the bag had been ransacked.
The 69-year-old only discovered the robbing when she collected the bag from the luggage carousel where she was changing planes for Las Vegas. She had been travelling to take part in a poker tournament and has since offered a £6,400 reward for the missing jewellery.

The pinched jewellery reportedly comprised of a £25,000 ladies' diamond encrusted Rolex watch; a 6-carat diamond ring set in white gold worth £38,000; and a £16,000 diamond ring with blue sapphires.

A spokesman for US Airways has said that staff had offered the passenger the opportunity to remove items from her bag before it was placed in the hold. The airline is investigating the incident with law enforcement.
