Even the historic pomp and weight age of Delhi or Agra or even our local Panduah, Murshidabad or Malda lie beyond comparison to that of Kolkata. Although, in this odd 300 or so years of lifespan till date, this city has seen a lot of tumultuous time and vicissitude. Initially the capital of the mighty British Empire, at later stage the hub of business and industry of the nation and lastly, as of date, it is the cultural capital of India.
Naturally, plenty and plenty of famous writer in Kolkata and novelist in Kolkata have lived and worked in this city. They have blended their divine gifts with powerful work and mesmerized the entire humanity. Bengali being the tongue of the land, the lion's share of famous writer in Kolkata has worked in the language. English being the lingua franca and Kolkata with its strong links to British colonialism, it is but natural that plenty of novelists in Kolkata have worked in English as well. Even to this day, the exploits of novelists like Amitava Ghosh, Jhumpa Lahiri, Sarnath Banerjee, Vikram Seth, Upamanyu Chatterjee and others in the international arena is worth boast about. The exiled Nawab of Oudh, Wajid Ali Shah was the pioneer in writing in Hindi finely mixed with chaste Urdu in the British capital of Kolkata. Almost contemporary to him, another literary wonder in form of Bharetendu Harishchandra has served the modern Hindi literature to gigantic extent.
In tandem with these annals of history, Kolkata still is home to many a literary giant. These people are defining new heights for the contemporary comparative literature. The city and its prosaic people are lucky indeed to have famous writer in Kolkata and novelist in Kolkata all around them.
