Avastin mitigates ovarian cancer escalation

Fontana, NY (prHWY.com) June 8, 2012 - 8 June 2012, USA(Zeepharmacy.com): A recent clinical investigation led to the findings that the addition of cancer medication-Avastin to the treatment approach greatly aids in enhancing the period of cancer progression in women suffering from advanced ovarian cancer.
Avastin, an anti-cancer medication was developed to block the blood vessels responsible for supplying nutrients to the cancer cells thereby resulting in the growth of tumor.
The medication, which is a product of Roche's Genentech unit, has been approved long before in U.S for treating lung, colon and other severe forms of cancer in conjugation with chemotherapy.
The U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has annulled the approved use of Avastin for curing advanced breast cancer, claiming that the medication is associated with critical side effects on the health in addition to not significantly lowering the cancer progression.
Around 361 women suffering from ovarian cancer that failed to show proper response to platinum-based chemotherapy was involved in the study, which leads to the use of a different chemotherapeutic approach involving Avastin.

The results obtained after 13 months and 15 days proved that 75% of individuals with chemotherapy and Avastin showed recurrence of cancer as compared to 91% of the people with chemotherapy only.
The progression-free survival time (time period prior to the progression of cancer after the initiation of treatment) for the Avastin group was 6.7 months and that of chemotherapy group was 3.4 months.
Eric Pujade-Lauraine, lead author of the study said that the study has proved to be significant as for the first time in history an improvement in the treatment of ovarian cancer has been shown in women resistant to platinum-related chemotherapy by the use of combination approach.
But, side effects such as hypertension and gastrointestinal complications have been found in patients with Avastin and chemotherapy group as compared to chemotherapy alone.
