I've heard people say that the element that makes the biggest difference between a good event and a great Event is money... WRONG. Don't get me wrong, money certainly helps because it can bring you people with innovative ideas that will enhance the impact of your presence. Beyond everything else, the most important thing to display at a trade show is personality. All of the fancy signage and high end video montages mean nothing if the product and personnel representation is mediocre.

Having been to my share of trade shows, it is obvious to see who is "into it" and who is mentally on vacation. Recently, I exhibited at a local trade show for association and meeting planners. Walking the trade show floor, it was easy to spot the booths that were really out to impress. Don't get me wrong, everyone showed effort but some booths took it the extra mile by creating a theme, designing their space to enhance the mood, playing ambient music and serving thematic drinks to encourage traffic. A seemingly simple concept helped to push their goal of capturing attendees and corralling them into their space. As guests listened to the music and enjoyed their beverage they simultaneously engaged in pertinent business conversation and accomplished their show goals.

At this same trade show, Total Events displayed a dining table design that was opulent and dramatic to really grab the attention of the crowd. It looked like something you would see inside a very swank celebrity home, and so we pet named it "Khristmas with the Kardashians" after the popular reality family. People stopped by this trade show exhibit booth to gawk and take photos and when they saw the table name, the conversation opened up into TV preferences, celebrity likes and dislikes and beyond. After a while, I found that I was communicating with these relative strangers like they were long lost friends and establishing a rapport that would make future contact easy and organic. Before the show was over I even heard a group of meeting planners talking about "that beautiful Kardashian table". Pop culture works!
