Seattle, WA (prHWY.com) November 16, 2012 - A recent survey of college students conducted by the University of San Jose discovered that 60% of college students would only shop at a thrift store if it were a last resort. While those results might not seem shocking or surprising, it was for a group of students at the University of Las Vegas.

"We couldn't believe that so many college students were so out of touch with reality", said Sam Young, a college sophomore at the University of Las Vegas. "Thrift stores have really improved over the years and for college students they can be an amazing way to look fashionable and hip without spending a lot of money."

When Sam Young heard the survey results he was so shocked that he vowed to do something to change not only college students, but the general public's opinion of thrift stores. Sam Young gathered his entire dorm on the University of Las Vegas' campus together and had them make a pledge to use only what they could find in thrift stores for a year.

"Some people were a little reluctant to take part in this type of thing", said Sam Young. "It did take a little convincing, but when I showed them just how much they could save by only shopping at thrift stores, I think they were convinced. I mean college students always like a good deal and that's what thrift stores offer."

The entire college dorm at the University of Las Vegas has vowed to try to live only off of what they can find in thrift stores. There are a few exceptions to this rule.

"Of course, students may need to purchase items such as laptops, computers and other technological devices at a regular store", explained Young. "Students will also need to purchase personal hygiene products and food items at a regular store. However, everything else from desks, rugs, chairs and clothing can all be purchased at a thrift store."

The students plan on documenting their social experiment in a live blog. Many of the students who are participating will write a weekly blog detailing their finds at thrift stores and even produce a podcast or video for people to see what they are really doing.

"We think this is something that the whole world can get behind", said Sandy Miller, a college freshmen. "Even if people don't, it'll still be something fun and exciting that I can tell my kids I took part in when I start a family. It'll be a lot of fun."
