(prHWY.com) February 5, 2013 - Chicago, Taiwan -- Vintage jewelry is finally done right. So many in the market advertise items as 'vintage', not really knowing the meaning of the term or the history of the item being sold. And, if the item is vintage.
It simply does not aesthetically translate into what is happening in today's trends. The pieces tend to be a little dated and sometimes downright tacky. Enter Lulu Hamissou. Lulu worked in graphic arts and fashion design in Los Angeles, CA for the almost 9 years before relocating to Austin, TX.
In Austin, she began focusing her attention on collecting, curating, and restoring vintage jewelry pieces. When collecting pieces, she chooses to purchase items that "are not obvious." She is attracted to what she calls "strange, haunting, and oddly beautiful pieces," saying that these are the pieces that speak to her. When asked her biggest fashion influences, she states Alexander McQueen, Isabella Blow, and Vivienne Westwood.
Last fall, she launched her e-commerce website
www.greyparachutes.com to introduce and sell some of the pieces that she has come across along the way. The interesting thing that sets her website apart from the rest is that all of her pieces are evaluated by a gemologist in order to learn the circa. Additionally a thorough background is done on each piece, in order to learn what was happening socially and economically during that time period that would produce such a piece. Currently her team is in the process of creating pieces that are vintage inspired and she says that these will be on the website as early as this fall.
