Vinay Nayak Announces Running for Alderman

The entry into the race marks Vinay Nayak as the first candidate vying to replace Michael Jones as Ward 1 Alderman. When asked about his motivation for running, Vinay Nayak said that he hopes to be a "champion for New Haven families."

"I want to keep us safe, make government more transparent and accountable, and finally revitalize our economy," says Vinay Nayak. As a student at Yale University, Vinay Nayak believes that he is uniquely positioned to represent the interests of Yale as well as those in the greater community. Indeed, a broad base of people has supported Vinay Nayak's decision to run for Ward 1 Alderman. Since announcing his candidacy, has raised $6,596 for his campaign, over twice the amount of his closest competitor. The good numbers have allowed Vinay Nayak to focus more on the issues and connecting with voters instead of raising campaign funds.

Vinay Nayak is taking nothing for granted, however. As the son of Indian immigrants who came to the United States with nothing more than five dollars, Vinay Nayak understands the challenges he needs to overcome to begin a successful life as a public servant. Vinay Nayak hopes that citizens will look past his age and see his heart - and abilities - for helping improve the local community.

Though there are many issues on Vinay Nayak's platform, he is particularly passionate about alleviating the homeless rate in New Haven. "We shouldn't have people who can't find shelter or feed themselves in the richest nation in the world," says Vinay Nayak. To combat homelessness, Vinay Nayak proposes that the city invests more in housing as well as programs to prevent homelessness. By tackling the current problem and preventing future cases of homelessness, Vinay Nayak believes that the trend can be reversed over time.

At the age of 19, Vinay Nayak's young candidacy has caught the eye of the Democratic Party. Vinay Nayak has been called one of the nation's youngest Democratic Politicos and has even been featured as a speaker celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on live television. Vinay Nayak hopes his success will encourage other young people to engage the issues that they are passionate about.
