Two ACL Injuries in the NBA on one day - coincidence or not?
Derek Rose and Iman Shumpert are very athletic players, who have performed the same movements many times. A complete movement screen was likely not performed to accurately determine the readiness of participation before the playoffs began.
(prHWY.com) April 30, 2012 - Elmsford, NY -- As most of you sports enthusiasts know both Derek Rose, guard of the Chicago Bulls and Iman Shumpert, guard of the NY Knicks, sustained ACL injuries to the left knee this past Saturday during their first playoff game. From a lay person's perspective, one may think these injuries are simply coincidence - they would apply Murphy's Law to the prospect to either the Knicks or Bulls winning the championship this year, but as a Board Certified Orthopedic & Sports Specialist or as I like to refer myself as, Sports Movement Specialist, these injuries are far from coincidental.

The fact of the matter is that the number one reason for sustaining an injury is previous injury. All NBA watchers realize we are playing in a condensed season, at times 4-5 games in a 7 day span. It is easy for one to realize how quickly injuries can mount up.

The human body has a very sophisticated means to compensating for an injury remote to the area involved. This means, for example, that a problem with the big toe or a problem with the groin can alter the ideal biomechanics of the lower kinetic chain. We all know that Derek Rose and Iman Shumpert are very athletic players, players which performed these same movements many, many times. It is unfortunate that a complete movement screen was likely not performed to accurately determine readiness of participation.

The functional movement screen (FMS) is a standardized screening that consists of 7 movement patterns. Each of these 7 movement patterns are graded 0-3. A score of 14 or better with equal values right to left is a strong indication of a healthy return to sports participation. We perform this screen to all our patients upon discharge.
