(prHWY.com) June 9, 2012 - Fontana, CA -- 9 June 2012 USA (Realpharmacyrx.us): Actos (brand name) or Pioglitazone (generic name), an anti-diabetic medication is found to increase the risk of bladder cancer in type 2 diabetic individuals taking the aid of this drug. While, most of the health care professionals said that every individual taking this drug are susceptible to acquiring bladder cancer, thereby making this topic a current hot topic of the clinical world.
The researchers claim that diabetic individuals consuming this medication are at higher risk of developing the condition than those not taking it and also the risk of the cancer increases with increasing time.
Actos is a long term prescription medication and taking this drug for more than 2 years is found to increase your risk of acquiring the cancer by almost twice.
Dr. David Juurlink, head of the clinical pharmacology division at the University of Toronto, said that the current findings prove that there exists a connection between the diabetes drug and bladder cancer.
Whereas, Prof. Laurent Azoulay of the Montreal's Jewish General Hospital claimed that despite being a higher ratio of incidence, the risk associated with Actos are relatively low.
The study took into account around 115,727 diabetic individuals and was divided into four groups depending on the type of drug given for treatment.
The first group involved individuals taking Pioglitazone only; the second class was given Avandia (another anti-diabetic medication), the third took a combination of the two drugs, while the fourth group was given none of the drugs to treat their condition.
The results showed that only a small fraction of about 376 individuals were found to get afflicted with bladder cancer; whereas, 6,700 people showed no affliction with the cancer. Also, augmented risk of bladder cancer was found only in individuals taking Actos or Pioglitazone medication.
