Dropshipping Electronics, Make Sure Too Many Batteries Aren't Included - Chinavasion

Lithium batteries are essential for many gadgets, but new safety standards means dropshipping with a certain shipping carrier will be much more difficult if not impossible.

Shenzhen, China (prHWY.com) January 2, 2013 - Shenzhen - Batteries might be the lifeblood of electronic devices, but dropshipping them by themselves could prevent your entire package from getting through customs, according to China dropship company, Chinavasion.

"Take the United Kingdom's Royal Mail, for instance," says Chinavasion PR manager Rose Li. "Come the 14th of January 2013, the Royal Mail will duly destroy all Lithium ion/polymer batteries that are shipped on their own."

The Royal Mail cites Lithium batteries as a significant fire hazard. Once the batteries catch fire, the flames they produce are extremely difficult to put out. The batteries pose a serious threat in the closed confines of an airplane, thus the new safety standards.

"This can be a serious problem for those running a dropship business, especially when dropshipping replacement batteries from a dropship supplier," Li adds.

There are exceptions to the rule, though.

According to the Royal Mail's 6966 DG A5 "Business Customer Booklet," up to two Lithium batteries installed within electrical devices will be allowed through the Royal Mail. Up to two spare Lithium batteries can also be shipped as long as they are marked, documented and are addressed to UK destinations.

Li cautions retailers to work with their dropship wholesaler to ensure that all orders either comply with the Royal Mail's new safety standards or to find an alternative shipping carrier. Failure to do so, she says, could result in batteries being destroyed without the retailer's knowledge. That same retailer might even be prosecuted for a criminal offence.

"It may cost more, but it is a necessary evil when dropshipping Lithium batteries to waiting customers."
