With no prior musical training or guitar lessons, he seemed to have a naturally blessed talent and just picked up his guitar and began to play. His first electric guitar was a secondhand 1949 Grazzioso.Jimmy then began to learn guitar from a teacher in Kingston with only a few lessons most often became as good as his instructor.His parents actually encouraged him to play rock and roll music. He owned equipment that all the other young guitar players wanted but couldn't afford. There were records, a tape recorder, a couple of amplifiers and guitars among other instruments along with a hi-fi system.
In his early colledge years the rock scene started to happen with The Rolling Stones, and the Liverpool R&B scenes started forming in England.
Inspired by the new events that were taking place at that time, he began playing in numerous jam sessions and eventually became a studio musician. During the course of which time Jimmy was asked to play on a record, which was and unrecognized tune (which was not a chartbuster), that however led to many other offers.Jimmy was then forced to make another descion. He played onthe first Zeppelin album and many others with a Supro amp. On the "Stairway to Heaven" solo Jimmy played a Fender Telecaster through the same Supro amp. At live shows, he used a Marshall 100 watt which he had customized to put out 200 watts.
