Your Guitar Hero can teach you how to play guitar
I've got at least six guitar heroes, every guitar player has at least one.

The difficulty with having a guitar hero is that we often place them on a pedastal - an unachievable god like status that stops us from actually learning from them.
When someone says Angus Young, Kirk Hammet or Joe Satriani is the greatest guitar playeron earththey instantly put a label on him that makes his playing unplayable in their mind. In realitywhat nearly all players do most of the time is pretty uncomplicated. They use pentatonic and blues scales almost exclusively. They have a standard picking technique, they've practiced an amazing number of hours AND they pick the correct notes to play.
It's not the mind numbing finger burning furious runs that make guitar players great, its the string of notes put together in a coherent form that makes people react positively to the music.
So where does that leave us with our heroes?
In a terrific place - a place that we can actually be taught a great deal from. The initial thing you have to do is to make sure that you can play your pentatonic and blues scales without thinking about them. They are essential to successfull learning. This means in all keys and all positions.
Mastery comes with daily practice
Then it's time to listen to a guitar solo.
Decide on one that isn't too flash - Angus might be a good place to start or maybe of Eric Clapton's or B B King's -and pay attention to what they play carefully. Try and sing along with the solo - if you can do this you're well on the way to being able to work it out.
This is where your dilay practice will reward you - if you've been practising your scales and training your ears - you will easily discover what key the song is being played in and you will figure out the solo.
The feeling of achievement in learning like this is tremendous as opposed to learning from tablature - but naturally its much harder at first - but as your ears improve and your understandingof your scale patterns improves you will get better every day and ultimately will very rarely see the need to use tablature again.
