Texas Psych Legends Release Golden Dawn Power Plant Live DVD
On 4/29/2012, at the Beauty Ballroom in Austin, Texas, the Golden Dawn reformed one more time to perform the entire Power Plant album live at the 2012 Texas Psych Fest. A DVD has been created documenting this historic performance.

The Golden Dawn were an American psychedelic rock band formed in Austin, Texas in 1966. They issued a sole album before disbanding titled - Power Plant. The Golden Dawn were on the same recording label as the 13th Floor Elevators; the infamous International Artists Label out of Houston. It has been said that George Kinney's vocals sound similar to his friend - Roky Erikson. Power Plant was recorded in 1967; the same year as the Elevators follow-up album: Easter Everywhere.
George Kinney, of the Golden Dawn, was asked how it felt to be performing the 1968 material again. He replied, "It was a wonderful thing. I've been playing several of the songs on my sets over the last 40 years, but to put together a complete set of exclusive Power Plant songs, the album in its entirety was a real challenge. Some of those songs are really hard to sing and require a range that was a real challenge to my voice. (Band members) Mary and Frank helped me overcome the hard spots and it all came out really well. I loved the rehearsals and the gig was one of a kind...really satisfying."

Mr. Kinney was asked about comparing today's audiences to the audiences from the sixties. He said, "Strangely similar. From the stage all gigs are a lot alike. I just go into a zone and try to give every song everything I have to give and hope the audience connects. The Austin Psyche Fest audience was one of the most receptive in my career. Mostly a young crowd, they really seemed to connect with the songs. It is a great feeling as a writer to see that your songs still relate after 45 years."
The whole project was a project of LOVE; love of the artists and love of that great example of Texas Psych music - the Power Plant album. All money from DVD sales goes to the artists who are the 100% beneficiaries of this.

George was asked why Power Plant has stood the test of time so well. He replied, "It's kind of a mystery, isn't it? My best answer to that is that for some reason, the strength of the lyrics and the strong commitment to the lyrics by the musicians on the album made it into something timeless. That is what true art is supposed to do, withstand the rigors of time. And apparently this album has done so and can be considered legitimate art. I am proud to be a part of it. It shows the common threads of our cultural evolution...what was relevant to us back then is still relevant to the youths of modern times."
