Consolidating its emergence as one of Abu Dhabi's noteworthy academic institutions, ALHOSN University marked a memorable year of achievements and recognitions in 2012.

Feats of Excellence

ALHOSN began 2012 on a high note by officially launching its Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program which is now offered alongside the existing Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering track and falls under the university's newly-instituted Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Six months later, ALHOSN would go on to receive full accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for its Education, Business Administration, Accounting, Management Information Systems, Urban Planning and Master in Business Administration programs.

Continuing its thrust towards strategic international partnerships, ALHOSN also signed a key Memorandum of Understanding with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), one of Malaysia's top higher education institutions.

The crowning glory of the institution came in September, when it became the first private university in Abu Dhabi to receive accreditation from the US-based Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) for its Bachelor of Science degree programs in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Software Engineering. It was the first time that a private university in Abu Dhabi received ABET accreditation for its Civil Engineering program; it was also the first time that any university in the UAE has received ABET accreditation for its Industrial and Software Engineering programs.

The ALHOSN community also celebrated the major achievements of its family members. Architectural Engineering student Daniel Malak won the 'UAE Through Your Eyes' short film competition jointly organized by the New York Film Academy - Abu Dhabi, the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and the US Consulate in Dubai, besting a field of 18 entries and receiving a scholarship at the Academy. Another architecture student, Suhail Mohammed Suleiman, was given approval by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in Abu Dhabi for his proposed design for an eco-friendly mosque and Islamic center to be built in Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island. The proposal received the prestigious 'Five Pearl Rating' under 'Estidama' - the sustainability framework aligned with Abu Dhabi's Vision 2030 development plan - from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council.

Another community member, Mohammed Ashraff, a university staff member, received a special award from the UAE Ministry of Labor along with 30 other distinguished UAE Nationals and skilled workers during the International Worker's Day celebrations on held last May.

Event-ful year

The past 12 months saw ALHOSN's visibility and prominence rise further at the local, regional and global levels through major events such as the 3rd Emirates and Gulf Volunteer Conference, where the university fielded an enthusiastic contingent of students and staff, and the 2nd Universities Forum in Sharjah Forum, where ALHOSN showcased its comprehensive line-up of academic programs to prospective students. Last March, the university hosted an 'AKOUN' workshop organized by the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development to encourage entrepreneurship among youths. The same month saw the university participate in regional discussions on the empowerment of knowledge workers in the Arab World at the 2012 Knowledge Management Middle East Conference held in Abu Dhabi.

In June, the American Corner of Abu Dhabi City, based in ALHOSN University, hosted the UAE capital's first-ever 'Volunteer Fair.' Other notable events where ALHOSN lent its active and memorable presence were GETEX Spring 2012, the latest edition of the Gulf's largest education fair; TESOL Arabia's 18th International Conference and Exhibition; the 2012 edition of NAJAH, the largest education, training and career fair in the Middle East; The Abu Dhabi Science Festival; and a special Business Roundtable and Luncheon held with Malaysian investors and dignitaries in Abu Dhabi in May.

Prominent guests

A number of prominent figures visited ALHOSN in 2012, adding color and inspiration to the university's special year. Abu Dhabi Award recipient and beloved alumnus Saleh Al Yarubi stopped by and gave a talk on his new book, 'Miracles and Achievements.' Renowned writer and poet Habeeb Al Sayegh and poets Saleha Ghabash,Aisha Al Kaibi and Khamis Al Rumathi treated professors, students and staff to a recital of their famous literary works. In April, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Board Member of the Make-a-Wish Foundation of the UAE was at the university to personally receive a signed copy of the best-selling book 'The New Silk Road' from acclaimed author Ben Simpfendorfer.

Capping off a year of valued guests was a lecture on the early days of the UAE and the influence of the country's founding fathers on its enduring success, delivered by renowned journalist Howaida Ata in celebration of the UAE's 41st National Day. Ms. Ata also discussed her book entitled 'Passengers of the Empty Quarter - About Mubarak bin London.'

Armed with its noble goal of 'Global knowledge with local vision,' ALHOSN University has ably responded to Abu Dhabi's call for high-quality, value-based educational institutions. Named after the emirate's historic ALHOSN Palace, the University was founded in 2005 by the Abu Dhabi Holding Company and currently offers 12 undergraduate and 7 graduate programs under the Faculties of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Business, and Arts and Social Sciences.
