This article shares with candidates basic features, such as patterns of the test and scoring & ranking process, of CMAT February 2013

With more than a month still left for the CMAT exam to begin, MBAUniverse.com will publish a number of articles on it. This article shares with candidates basic features, such as patterns of the test and scoring & ranking process, of CMAT February 2013.
1) Exam pattern
The CMAT examination is divided into four sections - quantitative techniques & data interpretation, logical reasoning, language comprehension and general awareness. Each section consists of 25 questions. With 4 marks for each correct answer, the maximum marks are 400. For each wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted. The duration of the exam is 180 minutes.
Now, let us have a look at the types of questions expected in CMAT February 2013.
Quantitative aptitude & data interpretation
Questions are normally single and not based on sets. A few questions can be slightly tricky. The topics from which questions are selected are: arithmetic (ratios, mixtures, work, averages, profit & loss, basic statistics, etc to be specific), number properties, probability and counting principles with an odd question in geometry and derivatives (i.e. maxima -minima). Questions on data interpretation (table and pie-chart) will require basic calculation skills.
Logical Reasoning
The section is a mix of the topics from arrangements (linear, seating, sequencing & arranging with conditions) to coding. The other questions are based on statement-conclusion, logical puzzle, numerical puzzle, Venn Diagram, true/false statements, visual reasoning, etc.
Language comprehension
The reading comprehension passages are generally short ones of two-three lines followed by questions. Most of the questions are likely to be based on words or phrases. The vocabulary questions come from synonyms & antonyms, fill in the blanks, idioms, etc.
General awareness
This section will be tough for those who are not updated on current affairs. Otherwise, most of the questions will be solvable. Keep yourself updated on current affairs, science, biology, political history, political geography and arts & letters.
2) Scoring & ranking
According to the AICTE website (aicte-cmat.in), the result of candidates appearing the test will be displayed with 'raw' scores and the 'rank' secured in the all-India merit list. The raw score will be calculated by assigning 4 points for a correct answer, -- 1 point for an incorrect answer and 0 point for no answer. Candidates will be provided with raw scores for each of the sections. This scoring methodology ensures that the candidates are awarded the points for what they know, while points are deducted for inappropriate random guessing.
A national merit ranking will be prepared based on the raw scores. In case raw scores are identical for more than one candidate, the ranking will be based on sectional scores considered in the order of:
Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation
Logical Reasoning
Language Comprehension
General Awareness
In case more than one candidate secures same ranking as per the above criteria, the same rank will be assigned to all of them but will be displayed by sorting their names alphabetically. The rank of the subsequent candidate will then be extended by the number of additional students having the same rank. For example, if three students are at 25th rank, the rank of the student whose name comes last as per the alphabetical order will be ranked 28th, the AICTE website said.
The national merit list will be prepared and displayed in the public domain indicating roll number, rank and raw scores. Candidates will be able to see and download their score cards indicating section wise marks scored, total marks scored and rank in the all-India merit list.
