Noida, India (prHWY.com) January 18, 2013 - In continuation with our series of analysis on different selection parameters of IIMs, this article shares with you all the information regarding weightages provided by each of the IIMs for the diversity factor.

In the previous story on IIMs' selection criteria, we discussed weightages provided by each of the 13 IIMs on Work Experience Parameter (http://www.mbauniverse.com/article/id/6615/).

Out of all the parameters used by different IIMs in their admission process, the diversity factor stands out as the most interesting one. IIMs provide weightage to diversity on two parameters - gender diversity and academic diversity. This is needed in the context of classes being overtly dominated by male engineering graduates. An example will make it clear - In the 2010-12 batch of IIM A, out of 380 students, 341 were male and 39 were female.

IIM Kozhikode was the pioneer in promoting women in management education. They have reserved 35 per cent seats for women. Gender diversity weightage is provided to female candidates to sustain the gender ecology in the campus.

Academic diversity weightage is provided to all those candidates who have done their graduation and post graduation from any stream other than engineering (such as BA, B.Com, B.Sc, BCA, BBA, B.Pharma, etc).
Let's look at the weightages provided by each of the IIMs for the diversity factor:
IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Indore, IIM Shillong and IIM Ranchi do not provide any weightage as such for the diversity factor.

IIM Calcutta provides weightage for the diversity factor at both the short listing and final selection stage. In the short listing stage, it allocates 3% weightage for the gender diversity factor which signifies the fact that female candidates will be awarded 3 points. While in the final stage, weightage for academic diversity is provided at both bachelor degree level (2%) and post graduation level (1%) for all non-engineering degree holders.

IIM Lucknow allocates 3% weightage to academic discipline i.e. to candidates with non-engineering academic background. Weightage of 2 per cent is provided to female candidates under the gender diversity factor. All these weights are calculated out of 50.

IIM Kozhikode is referred to as the pioneer in promoting women in management education. Thus, they straight forwardly allocates 5% for gender diversity.

IIM Raipur provides weightage to the diversity factor under the heading 'Profile' in the final selection stage. Profile is given 20% weightage and it includes academic profile, work experience and diversity as the third component. Diversity is thus given 40% of Profile weight. If calculated, the exact weightages for both the factors come out to be as 4.5% for gender diversity and 4.5% for academic diversity.

IIM Kashipur has similar short listing criteria as that of IIM Lucknow in terms of methodology and parameters used. IIM Kashipur provides 3% weightage for academic diversity factor and 4% weightage for gender diversity factor in the short listing stage. These weightages are calculated out of total 60.

IIM Rohtak provides weighted score to every parameter by scaling the score to 100. Hence, a maximum score of 30 is set aside for both the diversity factor; gender diversity & academic diversity.

IIM Udaipur adopts the similar methodology in preparing the final merit list as of IIM Raipur. Weightage to the diversity factor is provided under the heading Profile which also comprises sub parts like academic profile & work experience. Diversity is thus defined as 30% of Profile weights which, when calculated further, comes out as 3% each for gender diversity and academic diversity.

IIM Trichy provides a maximum weightage of 1% for academic diversity and 1% for gender diversity. Candidates from commerce/economics and management stream get the maximum weightage of 1% under academic diversity.
After the detailed analysis above, we can say that inspite of having different short listing and final selection criteria and parameters, IIMs are approaching fast towards sustaining gender ecology and attracting candidates with diverse academic background in to their campus.
