"The problem of tax arises not about paying it, but about the administrative part of it," said Mr Rajan Vora, Chairman, Direct Tax Committee, IMC. He said, when we go to an Income Tax Officer with our difficulties, no solutions are available. There should be regular interactions with the tax payer and the income tax authorities, he said in his opening remarks.
After listening to the complaints of the audience, Mr Shah said, "Income Tax department has gone under tremendous transformation. Everything is computerized and faster now." Technology at times can be slightly complicated due to the non familiarity of the staff or technical snags. But everything will fall on line soon," assured a confident Mr Shah.
Ms Kiran Oberoi Vasudev said, "earlier the tax asesse and the assesser used to be in the same city and with the electronic and online communications, it is slightly difficult to interact like earlier."
The following points were suggested by the members of IMC and the participants were agreed up on by the IT authorities at the interactive session:
· If the tax amount is assessed, that doesn't mean that you have to pay it, one can go for arbitration. The government is keeping it that way since, if there is a dispute, there will be a solution.
· In case of any disagreement with an IT Officer, one can go to his higher up with the same problem and explain instead of leaving it over there.
· In any IT Survey notice there will the details of the senior officer other than the officers who are conducting it. In case of any complaint, one can contact the senior officer.
· Timing of IT Surveys and IT raids will be strictly followed.
· More interaction between the authorities and the tax payer will be introduced as a part of the image building exercise.
· Shortage of staff and software hitches will be solved.
