Mayor of Small Town in Iowa Vows to Shop Only at Local Thrift Stores for a Year
The newly elected mayor of Indigo Rivers, Iowa has made a bold, yet rather unique promise to his town. The announcement came just a month after being sworn into office, but he promises that he will only shop at the local thrift stores for a year.

"So many of the residents of Indigo Rivers have this idea that they can only shop at regular, retail stores", explained John Levy, mayor of Indigo Rivers. "I don't think that is the case at all. People can find a lot of great things at thrift stores; they just have to give them a chance."
John Levy has made a commitment to shop exclusively at the thrift stores for everything that he needs. This commitment includes items for both personal and professional use.
"I will be shopping at the local thrift stores for items for the office and for my home", explained John Levy. "This will not only help with the budget crisis we're in, but it will help promote the local economy and encourage people to shop at these local stores."
The challenge to shop exclusively at thrift stores is being extended to all residents of Indigo Rivers and to the businesses. John Levy hopes that this will encourage people to get up and shop at the thrift stores.
"Shopping at the local thrift stores is such a great thing", explained John Levy. "It not only saves money, but it helps reduce the area's trash. A lot of times people toss things out and just buy stuff new. Now, people are recycling and reusing things. It really is helpful all around."
Some residents of Indigo Rivers are a little reluctant to take part in the challenge. They are unsure if the challenge would include groceries, personal hygiene products, etc. The mayor hopes he can clear up some confusion on that.
"When I say that I am exclusively shopping at thrift stores, of course I don't mean for food products and other items", the mayor said with a laugh. "Sure some of the thrift stores around here have candy and other little items, but I don't think you could live off of that for a year. People can shop for food items and other personal products at others stores."
The whole goal of the challenge is to get people to try to reduce, reuse and recycle items. The mayor hopes that some of the 15,000 residents in Indigo Rivers will think about their spending habits and try to change just a little.
