MICA has emphasized on the fact that candidates who "demonstrate aptitude for expressing, assessing, or conceiving ideas that move people to action and achieve business results" tend to stand a better chance of being selected for MICA PG program.
MBAUniverse.com interviewed Prof Anita Basalingappa, admission chairperson at MICA, to understand more about the need to hold a separate entrance exam, MICA admission process and what kind of a paper to expect on March 3, when MICAT 2013 is held in 10 centers all over India.
Excerpts from the interview follow.
Q: Why does MICA not have any CAT cut off? What is the rationale behind it?
Ans. Candidates will be invited for Group Exercise and Personal Interview to MICA campus, Ahmedabad based on their performance in MICAT and CAT/XAT/GMAT. Their sectional scores in Quantitative and Verbal sections in CAT/XAT/GMAT will be awarded 20% weightage each.
Q: What is the purpose of holding a separate entrance test?
Ans. MICAT has been designed as a comprehensive test to asses those abilities, namely, divergent thinking, written communication ability, creativity potential and general awareness about contemporary social and industry related issues including areas covering media , marketing, advertising and business.
All of these are considered important for a career in Communications Management and are not assessed by other tests. MICAT in its present form was introduced in 2007 and has been validated on samples of students and industry professionals by a team of experts.
Q: How should students prepare for MICAT?
Ans. We expect our prospective candidates to be well-read, innovative, and intelligent with an analytical bent of mind. We also expect them to be aware of contemporary social and industry issues including general awareness towards marketing, advertising, and business. A regular habit of reading newspapers and practice in analytical and creative writing would be useful.
The MICAT is designed to assess analytical ability, divergent thinking, written communication skills, and general awareness about the Communications industry.
How is the MICAT paper organized?
MICAT 2012 was divided into two papers and had the following pattern-
Paper I:
Part I- Questions related to reasoning and general awareness.
Part II- Part II of the exam tested the written ability of the test takers. The candidates were given a topic and they had to write both for and against the topic. But in conclusion, one had to either support or oppose the motion. Not taking a stance would mean that one would not be marked for the essay writing.
The next question in this section was that of story writing. On the basis of pictures given in the question, candidates had to write a story.
Paper II:
Paper II of the exam consisted of Psychometric Test. All the questions were compulsory.
Q: When and how will MICAT be held? How many candidates are you expecting? What is the last date to apply?
Ans. MICAT will be held on 3rd March, 2013. Approximately 4500 students will be writing MICAT exam. The last date for issue of application is January 29, 2013 and last date for receipt of completed application form is February 1, 2013.

GE/PI:
