E-cigarettes currently account for less than one percent of the multi-billion dollar worldwide cigarette market, with the numbers obviously in favor towards the tobacco companies who produce genuine cigarettes. Such statistics have already placed executives from the major tobacco companies in red alert.

Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog compares e-cigarettes to that of Apple's iPhone when it was initally released out on the consumer market. Since its introduction back in 2007, the iPhone now dominates the smartphone arena and taking a large chunk of profits from more established mobile phone competitors, and she believes that e-cigarettes are poised to follow such a meteoric trajectory. Herzog adds: "Consumption of e-cigs may overtake traditional cigarettes in the next decade, and they'll only evolve and improve as time goes forward - at far less risk."

The big tobacco companies are already rolling up their sleeves to brainstorm ways to compete with the new kid on the block, given that e-cigarettes are have already been given the support and blessing by many health experts and doctors who have championed their use as cessation devices for those who want to quit the nicotine habit without experiencing any withdrawal symptoms commonly associated with going cold turkey or using nicotine patches as substitutes.

But only time will tell whether the rising trend of electronic cigarettes will ultimately convince the hardcore smokers to see the light and follow a new direction in the future of smoking.
