Salman Rushdie: A cultural Emergency is happening in India

“I arrived in Delhi on January 22nd in the invitation of the distributors from the film of my novel Midnight’s Kids. The program was to go to four cities, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai, culminating within the Mumbai premiere from the movie on January 31st.

The day before I had been because of travel to Kolkata i was informed the Kolkata police would won’t allow me to go into the city. If I flew there, I was told, I would be placed around the subsequent plane back. I was also told this what food was in the request from the Chief Minister. I remember that after the Jaipur festival this past year Mamata Banerjee said she would not let me enter Kolkata. It would appear that she’s made great that threat.
