Chicago, IL (prHWY.com) February 14, 2013 - Purdue University CPA student Zaeem Mahmood is proud to announce that he has received his VITA certification, and has begun helping members of his community to prepare their taxes at no charge.

"I've always enjoyed helping people, and getting my VITA certification was one way that I could get involved in community service while also practicing some of the skills that I'll be using throughout my career," remarked Zaeem Mahmood.

VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, certification is available through the IRS, as well as a number of partner programs. Those interested in volunteering sit for a test related to various types of tax law, and receive training in the best practices for tax preparation, as well as in the use of multiple kinds of tax preparation software. Zaeem Mahmood had no trouble passing his test, as he has already mastered the basics of tax preparation through his CPA program at Purdue.

"Tax preparation is definitely something I'm very comfortable with at this point, so I'm not concerned about messing up anybody's taxes!" joked Zaeem Mahmood. "I think being a volunteer tax assistant will be a great way to gain experience, though, and learn more about the details of taxes and tax law. And of course, I'm excited to be able to help people with something that is often bewildering to handle alone, and expensive to have done professionally."

Zaeem Mahmood started his CPA program immediately after finishing up an undergraduate program in Purdue University, which he graduated with the most concentrations out of anyone in his class. With plans to become an accountant once he finishes his education, Zaeem Mahmood is grateful for the ability to practice his skills while he is still in training.

"I think the VITA certification program is a great way to get young accountants involved with their communities and help them gain useful experience," said Zaeem Mahmood. He plans on recommending the VITA program to fellow graduate students who want to become accountants, and hopes that all future CPAs can use the certification to lend a hand to adults and families in their communities.
