Quality Counts, Costs In Pet Clothing
Pet clothing and accessories have the same quality variations as their human counterparts: quality costs.

"It's like shopping at discount and high end stores," Posh Puppy Boutique owner Jennifer Kirk explains. "You pay more for similar products at some stores because more time is spent on making the product and it's made with higher quality materials."
Higher-end pet products are going to last longer--and in many cases, fit better-than those made with inferior materials. Better materials will help pet clothing last longer. The amount of wear, conditions each item is subjected to and how the product is cleaned will also affect its life, Kirk explained.
Detailing that can include hand-applied beading, Swarovski crystals and the intricate details that mass machines cannot reproduce is also found on many high-end pet clothing products, Kirk said.
For example, the Decadence Bridal Gown with detachable tiered long evening skirt from designer Central Bark Couture is not made for daily wear. Made from white shantung silk, it comes with a long skirt accented with a bow and crystal flowers cascading down the first tier. Made to order, it is one of the Posh Puppy products that is not returnable.
And while this elegant--and expensive--dress comes in four pre-set sizes, the precise measurements affect how it fits any given dog. "Just like humans, all dogs are not made equally," Kirk said.
She uses the example of a customer saying that their dog wears size small clothing. Kirk warns that one designer's "small" may be a different size for a product from a different designer. "I wear different size jeans in different brands," and dogs are no different, Kirk explained. Manufacturing location is another critical difference between the high-end pet products available at specialty retailers like the Posh Puppy Boutique and those available at big box stores. Most of the handmade products Kirk sells are made in the United States, often by people who have backgrounds in human fashion. These same people either retired from the industry or branched out into pet clothing.
Many of these designers will only sell their products to small businesses, largely because the small businesses are interested in promoting the U.S. economy, Kirk explained. That is one reason why these same designers will not do business with the big box stores where products are often made overseas.
"The products we sell are going to be distinct from other businesses," Kirk said. "Large chains are not likely to carry this stuff."
One example Kirk uses is designer Susan Lanci, who is based in Carlsbad, Calif. Lanci's dog collars and dog harnesses are made using Ultrasuede ® by subcontractors in the USA. They are going to last and Lanci, like other designers, stands behind her work, Kirk said.
"We want to have products that people want to have their dog in and the dogs are comfortable wearing," Lanci said. "We are proud of what we have out there."
