Australian Pet Owners to Spend More than $46 Million for Their Animals on Valentine's

Puppy love is definitely in the air on Valentine's Day for pet owners across Australia. According to a survey done by the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA).

Castle Hill, Australia (prHWY.com) February 22, 2013 - A total of $46.9 million will be spent on canine companions as well as feline friends on St. Valentine's Day. Almost $5 million will be spent by bird owners for their chirping comrades, more than $8 million for fish pets, and about $2 million for others. "It's wonderful to see how much Australians care for their pets. We truly are a nation that has a deep love of animals," said Rafi Cooper, WSPA Australia Head of Communications.

According to Cooper, while it is good that pet owners want to make their pets feel special on this day, some animals around the world are not as lucky. "That's why this Valentine's Day, I'll be giving a gift from WSPA's Really Wild Gifts online store," he added. This initiative by WSPA will help animals around the world that are suffering from lack of food and cruelty. Every purchase in WSPA's Really Wild Gifts online store will allocate $10 to the overworked donkeys in Palestine, $99 will help feed a bear for a couple of months, and purchase a disaster pack to help with the treatment of injured animals.

One in every two Aussies owns a pet, 23% of which own a cat and 36% own a dog. This is according to the statistics of IBISWorld, a private research company.

Over the last decade, people have changed the way they treat their pets, making them a part of the family. "They have moved from the backyard to the kitchen and from the kitchen to the couch, until before you know it they are living right with you and most likely sleeping in your bed instead of your partner," said Cesare Corgatelli, owner of an online shop for pets.

Today, it is not unusual for animal lovers to spoil their animals. Pet grooming shops have been booked some days leading to Valentine's Day. For dog owners, a special bath, haircut, and a new collar are some of the treats they give to their furry friends.
