South African Province Lifts Ban On School Trips

A ban on school trips imposed by the Ministry of Education of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal in September of last year has been lifted last month, allowing pupils from state schools in the region to once again enjoy class outings.

London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) February 25, 2013 - A ban on school trips imposed by the Ministry of Education of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal in September of last year has been lifted last month, allowing pupils from state schools in the region to once again enjoy class outings.

The ban had been imposed by KwaZulu-Natal Minister of Education Senzo Mchunu, after 30 student deaths on school trips last year raised concerns about safety. As a result, schools will now have to abide by stricter, additional rules, put in place to ensure the safety of children travelling on school buses or minibuses to attend school events.

In addition to this new set of rules, permission must be granted by the Ministry before each trip, and a risk assessment must be taken by the school. Bus drivers will also be strictly monitored, and their accident histories, as well as the vehicle's general maintenance state, will be checked prior to authorization of the trip.

As before, this new status quo only applies to state-run schools, with private schools continuing to be treated separately in this matter.
