Toronto High School Ends Traditional School Ski Trips

Once a tradition of Leaside High School, of Toronto, Canada, school ski trips are no longer being financed by that establishment's faculty.

London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) February 25, 2013 - Once a tradition of Leaside High School, of Toronto, Canada, school ski trips are no longer being financed by that establishment's faculty. For the second year running, members of the school's ski club (which, ironically, doubled in membership) will be deprived of the once-traditional outing to nearby Blue Mountain.

The daylong excursions were generally organized by the athletic council, in conjunction with teachers from the school, and financed by the students themselves. Recently, however, staff shortages, labour problems, increasing concerns with safety and overwhelming paperwork have put at end to these trips, which have not taken place since 2011.

Waning student interest and increasing academic pressures are also considered decisive factors in the extinction of school ski trips at Leaside.

The tendency extends to other schools of the area, which tend to go for safer activities such as tubing or take a more educational approach, with geocaching and snowshoe hikes. All in all, school ski trips to surrounding resorts have fallen by 40-60 percent, despite an increase in funding from Ontario's Ministry of Education.
