San Diego, CA (prHWY.com) February 25, 2013 - Now, let's see what our definition of hypnosis shows us or tells us about how we need to perform as hypnotist and what we are trying to achieve. Remember, one of the operative principles in this highly-focused state of mind is that the unconscious mind is free to act without interference.

So in this special focused state we want to put the mind into such a place where the conscious mind, the regular thinking, the critical factor of self
doubt or self analysis, these types of thoughts, are no longer interfering. Think of it a little bit like a radio. When the radio is a little bit out of tune you have all kinds of chatter and static that is coming in and interfering with the music.

When you are in hypnosis you tune the radio to perfection so that only one signal comes through. It is the radio station you've chosen. It is the one you want and you hear the signal loud and clear. This is one of the reasons why when people go into hypnosis their senses are very much enhanced.

People think they fall asleep and their senses disappear and they don't pay attention to anything. That is not the case at all. If anything, for most people most of the time, their senses are enhanced. They can hear more, they can feel more, and if their eyes were open, they could see more.

What happens though is that their thinking becomes selective. In other words, they pay attention to one stimulus more than another. So when you are in hypnosis with your eyes closed, you might become very sensitive to sounds and to things you are hearing, but things you are feeling may fall out of your awareness.

This is one way that a hypnotist might go after pain control for example, to create a numb arm or a numb leg. One of the things a hypnotist simply has to do is switch the radio station from the one that receives pain signals to the one that does pretty much anything else: be that a creative imagination, hearing sounds better, or even replacing the pain signals with pleasure signals.
