To the Skies: Verdant Visions of Hanging Gardens to Augment Future Skyscrapers Across the World

The future of urban architecture is set to give back to the environment, as builders, engineers, architects, and gardeners are looking to transform cities across the world into literal urban jungles.

London, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) March 8, 2013 - The idea of hanging gardens isn't relatively new. In fact, ancient history traces it back to the time of King Nebuchadnezzar II who constructed such an architectural marvel in his kingdom of Babylon as a gift for his beloved queen. Fast forward to more than a millenia later, the world seems to be back on track to bring back nature into the realm of high-tech cities. All eyes will be on the fashionable Italian city of Milan by the end of 2013 with the grand opening of the Bosco Verticale-a stunning high-rise duplex literally blooming with flora and greenery in lieu of a facade fronted by artificial glass and steel.

The project-spearheaded by one of its chief architects, Stefano Boeri-aims to redefine the classical cityscape of Milan and set an architectural movement befitting of the city's status as a fashion-forward trendsetter. The twin towers are set to be infused with a staggering number of verdant greenery that includes 11,000 groundcover plants, 5,000 shrubs, and 730 specially cultivated trees. Boeri also commented that the Bosco Verticale was a direct response to the cold and unfeeling atmosphere that many new skyscrapers give to an urban setting, particularly in places like Dubai and Shanghai.

The purpose of installing a hanging garden upon a building is primarily to create a more tolerable environment for residents and tenants against the constant air pollution that permeates a city. Plants require the presence of carbon dioxide to flourish and release clean oxygen as part of their biological process, and this is the driving force behind the push for green architecture. Cities like Chicago, New York, and Singapore are also on the bandwagon by placing gardens on the rooftops of pre-existing skyscrapers as a means to utilise the limited space for sustainability purposes. While they may not be as ambitious as the Bosco Verticale in Milan, the eco-friendly intention remains as rooftop gardens make for a pretty and functional sight amidst a mostly hard and unyielding urban landscape.

More to the point of being just a cleansing solution for cities, a garden-covered skyscraper could potentially change the way people live in cities by generating a more environmentally friendly attitude. Despite the maintenance such a structure may require, supporters of green architecture strongly believe that it is an investment worth looking into. The threat of global warming and the diminishing state of the world's rainforests means that society needs to find a way to re-imagine urban areas in a manner that respects the fragile state of our planet and prevent it from completely falling into polluted ruin.
