Manxman Mark Cavendish Leads His Belgian Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step During the Tirreno-Adriatico Opening

A gloomy first day for the Tirreno-Adriatico race did not deter the participating teams, especially the Belgian Omega Pharma-Quick Step. In fact, the 16.9km team time trial was won by the Belgian team, headed by the Isle of Man native Mark Cavendish.

Kendal, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) March 10, 2013 - The Manxman Mark Cavendish led his team Omega Pharma-Quick Step to the finish line with a time of only 19 minutes and 24 seconds, despite unfavourable weather conditions. Their team -- which must have been using powerful bicycle tyres - consisted of Niki Terpstra, Michal Kwiatkowski, Zdenek Stybar, Tony Martin, and of course, Cavendish himself. However, it was to Martin that Cavendish credited some of the glory for the win. Cavendish said when the team arrived at the finish line, "Two words, one name - Tony Martin. He did the majority [of the work] today. [It was] the planning they put into it but without putting too much pressure on it ... We finished with five but everybody had a part to play." and added, "There are no real egos here, except maybe me, but it was all about getting eight guys from point A to point B as quickly as possible."

Other teams in the winning line-up were Spanish team Movistar (in second place with 19 minutes and 35 seconds), American team BMC Racing (in third place with 19 minutes and 40 seconds), Italian team Cannondale (in fourth place with 19 minutes and 43 seconds), and Kazakhstan team Astana (in fifth place with 19 minutes and 44 seconds). British team Sky placed seventh, behind the Australian team Orica Greenedge that finished with 19 minutes and 49 seconds.

For the Indicatore race of the Tirreno-Adriatico, Cavendish is set to compete with strong opponents, including Lotto Belisol's André Greipel and Cannondale's Peter Sagan, who won the Tour de France's renowned bicycle clothing, the green jersey, last year. On another note, Team Sky's Chris Froome is set to compete for the General Classification race despite their team placing seventh in the time trial.

In the meantime in the Paris-Nice race, Andrew Talansky of the American team Garmin-Sharp won the third stage against six racers and took home the yellow jersey. The other riders who almost got the win were Davide Malacarne of Team Europcar and Gorka Izagirre Intxausti of Euskaltel-Euskadi team. The winning time got 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 15 seconds to finish the course of 170.5 kilometres.

The current ranking of riders for Paris-Nice is Andre Talansky in first, Davide Malacarne in second, Gorka Izagirre Intxausti in third, and Andriy GRIVKO all the way in seventh place.
