Noida, India (prHWY.com) March 14, 2013 - This article brings you a detailed feedback of CAT/XAT Toppers of various institutes including IIMS, XLRI, NMIMS, FMS, etc.

Group Discussion (GD):

Srijan Srivastava - NMIMS, Batch 2012-14, said, "The topic of my group discussion was the 'growth of India vs. growth of China'. The experience was good. The lot was turning out to be loud sometimes, but overall, it was a good discussion. My strategy was that I won't participate while people were shouting but will only pitch in between with valid and new points to give direction to the discussion. I think pitching in the discussion for four to five times to make noticeable contribution is a good way to make the right kind of impression".

Arjun Gupta - XLRI Jamshedpur, 95 percentile in XAT 2012:

I attended the GDPI rounds for the following institutes:

* NMIMS, Core
* XIMB, PGDM & PGDM(HRM)
* SPJIMR(FIN)
* XLRI (BM & HRM)

SPJIMR's admission process is unique in the sense that they call you on the basis of your profiles.
XLRI has a single PI round for the BM program. The interview covers all the important points, viz., work-experience, Graduation subjects, current affairs and ethics. Highly unpredictable stuff, I must say.

The HRM program has both GD & PI components. My interview went on for around 15 minutes in which I was questioned a lot about cultures, economies and technologies. I was asked to relate the factors citing suitable instances.
Some questions on work experience and mathematics were also there.
XIMB had a single GDPI round for its BM and HRM programmes. The GD was related to Income disparity and was manageable. The interview again revolved around my work-experience. We had a very candid discussion instead of an interview. I could easily answer all their queries related to work.

NMIMS's GD was related to the airline sector. The interview was about Petrol/Diesel pricing, Basic Share Markets term and history about my parent company.

For all the above GDPIs, I brushed up my Graduation Subjects well. Read about the major issues which are plaguing the nations, basic indices to measure economic health & society, knowledge about the parent company, its product profile, job role, etc.

Subhashish Bhadra - 100 percentile in CAT 2011: I appeared for the IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow GD, PI & Essay Writing sessions. The IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta experiences were similar. The interviews were focused on my academics. Hence, it was imperative to know my own subject matter quite well.

The IIM Bangalore and IIM Lucknow interviews were more generic, and it was based more on the personal type of questions, along with a healthy dose of academic questions.

Siddharth Jain - FMS scored 99.16% percentile in CAT 2011 & 99.93 percentile in XAT 2011-12 says, "In GD, always follow a framework, called PREP (point, reason, example & point). Discuss the point or the argument given, say reasons to substantiate the point give examples in support of the argument and conclude with a holistic approach to establish the point."

Written Ability Test (WAT)

Vaibhav Arora - IIM Ahmedabad, 97.51 percentile in CAT 2011: Try to find out your weaknesses so that you can work upon them and increase your learning. Follow editorials of The Hindu and Business Line for excavating your written ability. I went through the agriculture section of Economic Times Plus to brush up my knowledge on agriculture sector as it was my specialization area.

Begin with a narrative and informative tone on the topic and some aspects of it. The beginning paragraph must be an indication of how clearly you have understood the topic and then give a best shot in writing of the same.

Sumant Darshan - IIM Ahmedabad, 99.85 percentile in CAT 2011: In IIM Ahmedabad, there is space for essay in the application form - it is about two-thirds of a page. Write keeping in mind the space allotted. Most of topics given in IIMs and top B schools are neutral in nature are on contemporary issues.
