OAK BROOK, IL (prHWY.com) March 16, 2013 - Vinay Nayak is well-aware of the economic troubles facing the community of New Haven, Connecticut where he is running for Ward 1 Alderman. For his campaign, he has three main areas of focus: the safety of the community, transparency and accountability of local government, and the revitalization of New Haven's economy.

Vinay Nayak may be young but he already has experience in community development projects. "After moving to New Haven from Chicago to attend Yale, I immediately became politically active. I became an aide to the Board of Alderman's Community Development Committee," states Vinay Nayak. As an aide, Vinay Nayak got a better look into the bureaucracy of New Haven and saw what he sees today as "inefficiencies hampering the economic growth." Such problems, from his perspective, include the re-integration of former prisoners into the community's working society.

To fight community violence and recidivism Vinay Nayak fully supports prisoner re-entry projects. Vinay Nayak views every prisoner released from prison as an opportunity to contribute to society. "With former prisoners successfully assimilated back into society, there is less temptation to fall back into a life of crime," believes Vinay Nayak.

"The roadblock to prisoners' successful assimilation is unemployment," says Vinay Nayak. "I would expand fair employment opportunities." He hopes to accomplish this by removing questions about criminal history from applications from city jobs such as seasonal work. "Employers ignore applicants with criminal history, regardless of the offense," says Vinay Nayak. It is his hope that by eliminating criminal background questions in the application processes, former prisoners will be able to explain their history when invited for an interview. "It is important to minor criminals to not be compared to felons. An interview allows former prisoners to explain their history and explain their goals and preparedness for moving forward," says Vinay Nayak.

"By finding employment, the likelihood of devolving into the life of crime is diminished. By reducing the rate of crime, the negative perception of New Haven will gradually change. Reducing crime and fighting homelessness is my hope for New Haven and what I will fight for as Ward 1 Alderman," says Vinay Nayak.
