Groundbreaking ceremony for the Lao-Myanmar first friendship bridge
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Laos-Myanmar Friendship Bridge took place earlier this year and that marked the beginning of the 18 million USD (540 million baht) construction.

The Laos-Myanmar Friendship Bridge will be the first official friendship bridge constructed between both countries and it will be constructed over the famous Mekong River. The objectives of this construction are to boost trade and investment as well as enhancing the friendship and cooperation between both countries with this convenient border crossing facility. The bridge is estimated to be 691.8 meter long and 10.9 meter wide with two vehicle lanes and two sidewalks. It is designed with an earthquake resistance of less than 7. The good news is that this amazing construction will be completed in not more than three years! Which means that it is estimated to be finished in the month of August, year 2015.
"This bridge will play a significant role in facilitating transport for the people of the two countries, especially in relation to commercial activities. It will also enable us to connect with other countries in the region, especially Vietnam and China, and it can enable further transport links to India and Bangladesh as well," Mr Xaysongkham said to the Vientiane Times. Thus, it is believed that the bridge will undoubtedly be a new symbol of cooperation and solidarity between Laos and Myanmar.
Laos shares land with its neighbouring countries: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar. To date, land border crossing is not possible between Laos and Myanmar. The only way to get to Laos from Myanmar is by air. Now, with the bridge connecting both Laos and Myanmar, tourists can travel between countries by land legally! However, do note that visa is still necessary to enter each country. It is currently not sure if there will be any visa facilities planned. Therefore, be sure to check out the Laos visa requirement as well as the Myanmar visa requirement prior to departure.
