A3Superior Pest Control Services: Thermal Remediation aka Heat Treatment for Bed Bug Elimination
My name is Jeff Klein. I am an Associate Certified Entomologist and own A3 Superior Pest Control operating in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Thermal remediation a.k.a. heat treatment is the use of elevated temperatures to completely eliminate all stages of insect activity from egg to adult in one treatment if done properly. In most cases the temperature is brought up and maintained at 140°. This is done through the use of heaters either running on electrical current or fossil fuel. The most common fuel used is propane. Unfortunately in New York and New Jersey the use of propane is highly regulated and difficult to use on a job site. We have chosen to go the electrical route and use hundred KW generators tied into electrical heaters inside the structure to get the desired temperatures.
Many people are unaware that thermal remediation will eliminate bed bugs in one treatment with very little preparation required on behalf of the homeowner. There are items that have to be removed due to heat sensitivity such as oil paintings, aerosol cans, wines and liquor, and flammable items. But the majority of this work is done by the crew on site as it is their responsibility to ensure that no damage occurs to any of the homeowners belongings. The use of heat by itself if used properly causes little damage if any with a seasoned crew. There are some items that you have to be careful with such as furniture made out of fiberboard with the veneer surfaces. But again they can be managed so that there is no issue by simply taping over those veneers with painters tape. Once the room cools the glue hardens and no damage occurs. Again the knowledge and experience of the crew makes all the difference. I am proud to say that we have one of the most experienced and knowledgeable thermal remediation divisions in the Northeast maybe even the US.
Some of the things that you should be looking for when you decide to hire a thermal remediation company is again experience, the references that they are willing to supply, a warranty (always get a warranty), and a written agreement outlining responsibilities, length of warranty, damage waivers, and follow-up inspection. There are many companies that come in and do the heating and leave never to return. With any bedbug control project the follow-up warranty is just as important as the initial inspection.
Pricing of thermal remediation a.k.a. heat treatment for bed bugs varies depending on what area of the country that you are in. The average price for thermal remediation runs around three dollars per square foot. Now this can go up or down depending on the situation. Many people feel that this price is more expensive than a traditional chemical program but if you calculate your preparation time, the items you may have to throw away due to levels of infestation, your personal time that you have to spend living with bedbugs feeding upon you, the cost of dry cleaning, and the issue of living with pesticides that may have long-term effects if not used properly the costs of thermal remediation is actually equal to or less than that of a traditional program.
A3 Superior Pest Control provides Pest Control services. Some of our services include thermal remediation, traditional bed bug extermination using steam and residual products.
