Jake understood that there was no real malice in him. Unlike many dogs, he is completely able to distinguish between people who are weird but harmless and people that are not harmless. When he sees someone who looks suspicous, he simply alerts and waits quietly, studying him. No barking, no growling, no lunging. Nice people find his teddy bear face very appealing and comment on how cute he is, while gangbanger types take one look at him and slink off. He also took, without fighting back, a (rather ineffectual) attack from my 13-year-old, blind, deaf, somewhat senile Basenji who did not recognize him the morning after he arrived. Jake understood. (My Basenji apologized profusely after he realized who Jake was)."
