Walking Sticks Online is a specialist retail website selling over four hundred different walking sticks. Run by Emily Todd and Hannah Petty, the business is now in its eight year with the range and expertise increasing all the time.

As specialists you will find every type of stick for every type of user. From silver plated fancy canes for formal occasions such as weddings or funerals to rustic handmade thumbsticks for the countryman. From flipsticks and folding seats for outdoor pursuits to novelty sticks for the collector, there is something for everybody.

But the biggest love and attention goes to the handmade and handcarved sticks. Working with a handful of stick-makers who produce really individual and beautiful pieces, Emilyhannah Ltd is a veritable market place for the craft. It is understandably difficult for individual stickmakers to get the prices they deserve at shows or online so partnering with Enilyhannah Ltd ensures they get a good price for their skill and hard work and the company gets to showcase some beautiful sticks.
The materials used are all (except buffalo horn) British in origin and every part is handmade. From the hand turned brass collars and ferrules to the steam straightened shanks and turned handles everything is done by hand.

Stick-making is a long and careful process. Once the sticks are initially coppiced or cut from the woods, they are then left to dry for two to three years. Then they are steam straightened and then the real work can begin. A whole is drilled through the top of the shaft and a metal or wooden dowel is fitted. The other end of the dowel goes into the handle.

Many different materials can be used for the handles. Curly Ram's horn, deer antlers, buffalo horn or wood are the most popular choices and this is what gives the wonderful variety and individuality of the handmade range. Lastly, the ferrule or tip can be pinned on to the bottom of the stick and sometimes a brass or silver plated collar.

Hannah comments "I fall in love with half of the handmade sticks we buy and want to keep them, but then I calm down and put them on the website for sale! After seeing more and more of them from different stickmakers, I have come to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the shafts used, especially the twisty sticks. They are so rare to find out in the woods and then the stickmaker will straighten them and polish them so that you have a work of art at the end which will have a lifetime of use as a strong and reliable walking stick."

"The next thing I would like to do is to actually go out coppicing the sticks with my favorite stick-maker. It's fascinating to me how suitable sticks can be spotted growing as part of trees, bushes and hedgerows and then cut without harming the rest of the tree. What a lovely, practical and natural thing to make and do."

Emily comments "We are in the process of making some videos and then re-doing the photography so that the handmade collection can be really appreciated. Look they so beautiful in the flesh so to speak and we want to show this as much as possible on the website."
