Innovative Procedures Curb Hunger and Hasten Weight Loss
Patients enjoy meaningful weight loss results while the balloon is in place. Once they have achieved their goals, the balloon can be removed as easily as it was inserted. General anesthesia and incisions are not required.

One of the most sophisticated techniques is a balloon in stomach procedure that sees the insertion of a balloon in the patient's stomach to mimic the sensation of satiety. Patients can feel full without having to consume more calories.
This procedure is available through the Surgical Weight Loss Centre, a facility specializing in weight loss alternatives.
"The balloon partially fills the stomach and patients report a feeling of fullness after eating a much smaller portion of food than normal," a company official says.
"The emptying of food from the stomach is delayed, which in turn, acts to prolong the feeling of satiety between meals.
"There is no change to the digestion or absorption of nutrients and no need for special nutritional supplements."
The popularity of such a technique comes at a time when more and more North Americans are exasperated by how difficult it can be to lose weight. Temptation and access to high calorie foods abounds. In addition, exposure over many years to a range of ultimately unsuccessful diets has left many people wondering if they will ever be able to achieve their weight loss goals.
Aside from the weight loss success patients have enjoyed with balloon in stomach, it has also appealed to many because it does not require an incision.
Following an examination by a doctor using an endoscopic camera to verify that a patients' stomach is normal and that he or she is eligible for the procedure, the balloon is inserted through the mouth. The deflated balloon, which is made of soft and pliable silicone, is pushed through the esophagus and into the stomach.
Once inside, a tube attached to the balloon is used to gently fill it with saline solution. The balloon is left to settle and then the patient is free to go home. The balloon can remain in the stomach for up to six months.
Patients must adjust their diet at first by consuming only liquids for a week and then transitioning to solid foods.
