Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (prHWY.com) March 29, 2013 - Airport is an important element for one country as it gives the very first impression to travellers. Quite a number of interesting airports around the world and now, with the aim of boosting tourism growth, Sri Lanka is joining the team, opening a wildlife airport!
Yes, you read it right! This airport will be surrounded by wildlife sanctuaries, including wild baby elephants as well as exotic flora and fauna. As the icing to the cake, travellers will have the chance to get up close with the beautiful wild elephants and to feed them too. Also, according to the state-run airport chairman, Prasanna Wickremasuriya, an extra 100 million USD would be used to upsize the aircraft parking bay, from the current 10 to 14.

If you are fond of strange and unique things, here are a few unique airports that are worth visiting. One of them is definitely the world's largest airport (landmass wise) - the Dammam King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. It covers over 3002 miles of desert and is actually larger than the neighbor of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain! Another interesting airport is the Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. It is unique for its 18-hole golf course sitting right in the middle of the airport's two runways. However, public access to the golf course is limited due to security threats.

The first flight to be operated in the wildlife airport is none other than its own national carrier, the Sri Lankan Airlines whereas Air Arabia will be the first foreign carrier to fly to Mattala Airport, followed by Fly Dubai, the low-cost carrier of Emirates, a few months later. Air Arabia has announced twice weekly flights to Sharjah from Mattala, about 270 kilometres (168 miles) south of Colombo by road. Last but definitely not the least, the popular Hong-Kong based luxury hotel chain Shangri-La is going to build a hotel in the area! So, what are you waiting for? Hop on to your Sri Lanka visa application, get your visa done and get ready to be mesmerized by the wildlife paradise of Mattala International Airport!
