Contest between p2ptaxis Drivers Could Lead to Aggression
The ever growing number of taxi cabs on the roads is leading to increased tension between taxi drivers and has in some cases led to fights

A recent report into the number of taxis in the Cambridge area says that unless steps are taken to limit the number of taxi companies and taxi cabs on the road, the sheer competition between taxi drivers will lead to tempers boiling over and could lead to violence.
Local Councilors for the area have agreed to limit the number of 'London' Hackney style cabs around Cambridge city after taxi drivers said it was getting harder and harder to earn a living. The numbers of taxis in Cambridge is currently at all time high
with close to 300 taxis operating in the area. On top of that there are over 200 vehicles available for private hire. The latter are not regulated by the council. In the wider area around Cambridge there are another 700 registered taxis.
Cambridge has a particularly high number of taxis for the size of the town and population but this problem is not limited to just Cambridge, it is a problem right across the UK. Taxi drivers in every city have to queue longer and so take fewer passengers and thus work longer hours to earn their living. Add to this the time spent sitting in traffic jams and its though that taxi drivers now spend at least half their time waiting in queues, rather than actually driving around.
There have already been incidents where fights have broken out in taxi ranks in various towns and cities around the UK, so there needs to be changes and limits on the number of licensed taxis to ensure the situation does not escalate and get out of hand. Councils can no longer sit back and do nothing.Various towns and cities used to have a limit on the number of licenses given out but in recent years these have been lifted. The problem is that while the number of Hackney cabs can be limited by licensing, this does not stop restrict the number of private hire vehicles. More steps need taking to stop taxi ranks being over-crowded and to stop private hire vehicles working illegally and picking people up off the street, instead of only pre-booked passengers. If you are looking for a licensed airport taxi then consider taxis in grays.
