Ann Arbor, MS (prHWY.com) May 23, 2011 - Ann Arbor, MI - May 15, 2011 -- Stefan Stolarchuk, a recent masters graduate of the University of Michigan Music School, is always looking for repertoire for the bass trombone. As a result he was eager to have something written for him when he met composer Stephanie Boyd during Band and Orchestra Camp last year.

The music camp at the Interlochen Center for Arts in Northern Michigan offers year round educational opportunities for artists of all ages. Boyd and Stolarchuk were both counselors at the camp in 2010 and what transpired was an intriguing collaboration, culminating in a two-movement for piano and trombone piece entitled Lullaby and Dreamsequence of the Toy Soldier.

Boyd recalls her inspiration for the music, saying "I was fascinated with the extreme ranges of the bass trombone, so I delved into a musical storyline to support and enhance it . . . the piece is about a toy soldier who falls asleep listening to a music box next to him on a nursery room shelf in the first movement, and subsequently begins to dream about being a real soldier battling foe with courage and honor in the second". Boyd also notes that in performances of this piece that, "Stephan is really great at bringing out the moods of the piece, and you will hear the toy soldier's excitement, his fear, and his triumphs".

Lullaby and Dreamsequence of the Toy Soldier was performed on Saturday, May 14th at the Kerrytown Concert House in a program of Brahms, Gershwin, Thelonious Monk and others. The concert raised money for the 2nd Annual Burning Bush International Ministries Fine Arts Camp for youth in the arts.
