Freemont used car dealer excited about Zero Waste

Honda Motor Co. plans to move waste number from auto manufacturing plants to Zero.

San Jose, CA (prHWY.com) August 1, 2011 - While most automakers are focusing on green technology for cars, Honda is thinking green all around. They have put themselves on the frontier for zero waste manufacturing plants and are doing some amazing things, making used car dealers in Sunnyvale proud.

Out of its 14 North American plants, 10 are considered to be no-waste. This means that trash and scrap materials are not making it into landfills, but rather are being used in positive new ways. The most prominent of these 10 is the factory in Alabama. From its opening in 2001, Freemont used car dealers could boast about its zero waste policy. It was the very first plant in the United States to make such a claim. In 2008, a Honda plant in Indiana opened with the same goals.

A spokesman in Ohio for one of Honda's plants, Ron Lietzke has said that, "From a strict standpoint, sometimes it's cheaper to bring our waste to landfills. But getting the operations focused on saving waste tends to make the whole process more efficient, which leads to major cost savings at our factories. And we're also trying to be good citizens of our host communities, and they're increasingly concerned about landfill waste." Used car dealers in Sunnyvale understand what's most important, and for many that is the environment.

Honda was the recipient of the 2010 "Greenest Automaker" from the Union of Concerned Scientists and has been working diligently to keep the title. Not only does Honda have high hopes for its own brand, but Freemont used car dealers are encouraging others to follow their lead.
Today, Honda produces about 1.8 pounds of waste for every car that rolls off of the line. That is down from an incredible 62.8 pounds in 2001.
