Indo Canadians now make up Canada's largest minority population. At an average age of 31, they're a lot younger than Canada's baby boomers, and about 81% end up tying the knot.

"Marriage is a beautiful and complicated issue for everyone, but especially South Asians," says Founder and CEO of Winds of Change, Jivi Khehra. "Indian marriages are unions between families--not just individuals. By discussing expectations and establishing some ground rules, the transition can be a lot smoother and happier for everyone."

Nearly 50% of marriages fail in North America. Part of the reason for this is that would-be partners seem reluctant to ask each other hard questions: Do you both want children? Are you both religious? What do you expect from each other? Sometimes just vocalizing needs and expectations is enough to sidestep serious conflict and heartache. If fundamental ideas conflict, this can lead to problems down the road. "Couples have broken up post coaching sessions," acknowledges Jivi. "But if it's not going to work, it's better than a messy divorce where children are involved."

Winds of Change Premarital Coaching Program in Vancouver consists of five sessions--each focusing on different aspect of relationships: Exploration and History, Personality Styles in Conflict, Goal Setting & Going Forward, and Handling Stress & Anger. The final session, Follow Up and Future Plans, enables the couple to connect with their coach after the wedding to discuss their new life together.
