Luke Matheny will accept Wavecrest Award for Triple Threat Filmmaker of the Year

The Clearwater Film & Music Festival will present Luke Matheny the Wavecrest Award for Triple Threat Filmmaker at the 2011 festival on Clearwater Beach. Matheny entered his film God Of Love into competition months before winning the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film. Upon learning his film was being nominated for several awards, Matheny gracefully bowed out of competition saying "I've already benefited so much from this film. If I were lucky enough to win the Triple Threat Filmmaker award, I'd feel awkward taking it away from someone who would be able to benefit so much more from it. If it were an honorary award or something, that'd be fine."

Festival judges wrestled with a decision that would become pivotal for the future of the award. Last year the festival awarded the Triple Threat to Neil Webb for his feature film Railed Up And Wrecked, which he wrote, directed and acted in, convincingly as five separate characters. "He was tough to beat and a real standout." says festival director Mike Rembis "And the same thing happened this year with God Of Love".

The festival defines a "Triple Threat" as the actor/writer/director who wears many hats in making a film. While several films met the criteria, Matheny's film was said to "ratchet the bar up a notch" according to one judge, and "his work clearly deserved recognition for this particular award."

In the future the Wavecrest Triple Threat Award will follow suit as it has these first two years and be awarded only when decided unanimously by participating judges. Mike Rembis adds "With our festival we want to hold all filmmakers to a higher standard and in reserving the Triple Threat Award for filmmakers who honestly push for perfection our goal is to harvest the finest films to be found. It is my hope that the Triple Threat Award will be revered as prestigiously as it is meant to be."
