The late 2011 and 2012 versions of the Dodge Durango were named Top Safety Picks due to its stellar performance during the IIHS' four safety tests. The late 2011 and 2012 Dodge Durango models performed well on all tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning top marks for all categories in the front crash tests. The roof strength tests also produced good results, with the Dodge Durango being able to withstand more weight than some of its competitors. The only test that did not earn a top score was the driver's torso score in the side crash test rating, which earned an "acceptable" rating. Due to the changes made to the airbags beginning in May 2011, only the models produced in late 2011 and 2012 qualify for the award.
