BMW has plans for a sub-brand of electric and hybrid vehicles

Recently, the i series of these vehicles debuted in Frankfurt and the prototypes of the i3 and i8 were introduced.
The i3 is a compact completely electric car that is geared to the city commuter. This car is expected to be introduced as a 2013 model. This vehicle has the capability of going from zero to sixty in approximately eight seconds. Its battery only takes one hour to reach an eighty percent charge level.

The i8 is a sports car that will be a gasoline-electric hybrid. This car is expected to arrive for the 2014 model year. This car can accelerate from zero to sixty in five seconds and has a governing system that limits its max speed to 135 miles per hour. The i8's developer, Klaus Draeger, said that this vehicle is "the sports car for a new generation--pure, emotional, and sustainable."

Both of these vehicles have a unique carbon-fiber frame and an aluminum underbody. These components are much lighter in weight and combat the extra weight from the i3's electric drive system. This frame is about 550 pounds less than a typical frame would weigh. Draeger said that this is "the first volume-produced car featuring bodywork largely made of carbon" and referred to it as a "revolution in automotive design."

It won't be too long before Englewood used car owners will have the opportunity to purchase an i3 or i8 from their used car dealer, BMW of Tenafly. BMW executives suggested they may also add other models to the i series.
