Jay Lawlor may be best known for his groundbreaking work with the UN Millennium Project. He was hand picked by the notable American economist Jeffrey Sachs to develop an analysis of Millennium Development Goal funding by the Episcopal Church. As the result of this work, the Church developed guidelines for parishioners and parishes, detailing how much they should give and where that money should be spent.
Jay Lawlor still believes in the Millennium Project and he donates his own time and money to the cause. He's come to believe that sustainable projects have a role to play in helping the world to conquer poverty and disease, and he's taking an active role to find and promote sustainable projects.
People in the United States might be familiar with the idea of sustainability. In this country, a sustainable project might contain recycled materials, for example, or the building might produce its own energy through solar panels or wind turbines. "These ideas are needed and helpful here," Jay Lawlor says. "But they can be truly revolutionary and innovative for a developing country."
By definition, as Jay Lawlor explains, sustainable development projects are designed to meet needs today while also leaving resources for future generations, and in a way that protects our delicate ecological and environmental systems. "As an industrialized nation, we need to invest in more renewable energy sources and assist developing nations to do the same."
According to Jay Lawlor, communities of faith have a role to play here. These communities could fund sustainable projects, of course, but they could also provide needed advice and expertise. This is the sort of partnership Jay Lawlor hopes to develop in his work.
"Drawing on my experience as both an Economist and Episcopal Priest/Theologian, I am providing insight on issues of Sustainable Development, and advising faith communities on how they can participate in advocating and supporting these sustainable development projects around the globe," Jay Lawlor says. "I am seeking to develop new opportunities that will help educate, promote, and support creative sustainable development projects that could truly make a difference for people everywhere."
